Thirty-five participants from nine countries attended lectures by the working group faculty members, professionalization/ training sessions and mentoring sessions on their research papers.

The opening keynote lecture entitled “Conflict, Memory, and History: Contradictory Uses and Approaches in the Arab Region” was presented by Dr. Abaher Al Sakka (Birzeit University and a member of the ACSS Board of Trustees).

The program of the second Academy revolved around the themes of three ACSS working groups:

Goals of the Academy

• Preparing junior researchers for cross-disciplinary research that critically interrogates social scientific and humanistic research questions
• Exploring guiding concepts in Arab critical thought
• Understanding genealogies and canons of leading theories and frameworks relevant to the region
• Reviewing and assessing academic research and texts
• Collaborating with peers from across the Arab region
• Providing space for participants to present their research and receive verbal and written feedback from faculty members
• Bringing participants and faculty members together in order to discuss issues around publishing, teaching, and other professional concerns
