The Grants and Fellowships program offers research and training opportunities for junior and senior researchers from/in the region, often facing limited funding and mentoring opportunities. It comprises a panoply of programs designed to reach the wide audience of researchers and scholars who represent different generations and disciplines of the social sciences and humanities and are at different stages of their academic and professional careers.
The different programs encourage the production of independent, high-quality research and provide forums for training and exchange and communication among social scientists in the Arab region. They also support the publication and dissemination of high-quality social science research on the region. Generally, the ACSS Grants and Fellowships programs encourage inter-disciplinary and cross-regional research. Wherever possible, the ACSS seeks partnerships and collaborations with other organizations that have existing fellowships and research programs. Several of the ACSS programs target individuals, teams, collectives and institutions.
Review of proposals and applications and selection for grants and fellowships is undertaken by committees of regional scholars reflecting disciplinary, generational, geographical, and gender diversity.
Early Career Fellows Program (ECFP)
Established: 2015
Its aim is to enable young researchers, up to three years out of the PhD, to pursue their research and publishing plans, become part of Arab research networks, plan a research career in the Arab region.
New Generation of Social Scientists (NewGen)
Established: 2020
NewGen seeks to establish a pipeline of a new generation of committed, passionate and well-trained social scientists in the Arab region.
The New Paradigms Factory (NPF)
Established: 2012
Aims to facilitate research and publishing by innovative, critical-thinking, and engaged junior Arab scholars and activists, particularly those facing limited access to mentoring and/or publishing venues.
ACSS-FMSH Short-Term Postdoctoral Mobility Program
Established: 2018
A collaborative program between the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH) and the ACSS, designed to support the research of postdoctoral fellows from Arab countries and strengthen research networking and collaborations between France and the Arab region.
Research Grants Program (RGP)
Established: 2013
Provides funding to established researchers from the Arab region to conduct research across disciplinary boundaries and methodological traditions on key themes of concern to the region.
Scholar’s Collaborative Grants Program
Established: 2024
This fellowship, with a duration of 10 months, supports individual researchers holding a PhD degree in the field of social sciences, humanities and/or allied and interdisciplinary fields with an established research record, to conduct research projects on and in the Arab region.
Small Grants Program (SGP)
Established: 2017
A small and flexible funding modality to support individual researchers and practitioners as well as institutions in the Arab region in undertaking projects of relevance to their countries
Bassem Chit Fellowship for the Study of Activism
Established: 2018
The one-year-fellowship – based in Beirut, Lebanon – targets early career scholars (0-3 years out of the PhD) and is hosted and mentored by Lebanon Support.
Research on the Arts Program (RAP)
Established: 2018
RAP encourages academics, artists and art practitioners – citizens and residents of Arab countries – to pursue research projects that empower the production of academic and artistic knowledge that adds value to the field of arts.
