In addition to mainstreaming gender in all its activities and programs, the ACSS has gender-specific programs including the New Paradigm Factory program (NPF) on Gendered Resistance, Mapping the Production of Knowledge on Women and Gender in the Arab Region (MPK) and the Gender Oral History Archive – GOHA).
Further to the above, in 2019 the ACSS took stock of the status of gender studies in the region in an attempt to answer some of the following questions: What kind of knowledge(s) is now produced on gender and who produces it? How do we make sense of the complex landscape of actors – both academics and activists – and how can we understand the movements between and across several their trajectories? What are the gaps in research? What are the most salient and relevant issues that the ACSS should work on in the area of gender studies? Most importantly, how can we look at gender as a core concept within all these dynamics?
To answer some of these questions, the ACSS organized a workshop titled “The Status of Gender Studies in MENA,” on October 6–7, 2019 in Amman, Jordan which resulted in the ACSS publication “Gender Studies in the Arab Region: New Research Directions”.
