ACSS Organizes Panel on Power, Ethics and Academic Freedom at Academia and Social Justice Conference in Beirut

The 2nd Annual Conference of the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship and the Arab Studies Institue will take place on March 11-13, 2016 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Beirut. 
 
This year's theme is "Academia and Social Justice."
 
During the conference, the Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) will be organizing a panel titled "The University and Beyond: Power, Ethics and Academic Freedom" on Saturday March 12, 2016 at 4:15 PM. 
 
Speakers will be the following:
 
1) Eileen Kuttab, Birzeit University
–Gender, Equity, and Social Justice in the University
 
2) Ramy Aly, American University in Cairo (AUC)
–Academic Freedom between the University and the State
 
3) Perla Issa, Institute for Palestine Studies
–Reflections on conducting research with Palestinian refugees in Lebanon
 
The panel will be morderated by the ACSS Director-General, Seteney Shami.
 
About the Conference
The Academia and Social Justice conference brings together academics, students and practitioners from across the Arab region and internationally to discuss the role of academic institutions and actors in the debates on and promotion of social justice. Around 33 papers will be presented in 10 panels across three days on topics such as academia and the marketplace, pedagogy for social justice, student activism, knowledge building for social engagement and others.
