Visiting Scholar - Arab Region Studies - Northeastern University

The Boston Consortium for Arab Region Studies (BCARS), founded through a Carnegie Corporation of New York grant to the Middle East Center at Northeastern University, invites applications from scholars of the Arab region to serve as a Visiting Scholar in the Consortium. The expected term of appointment for the Visiting Scholar is September 1, 2014 - May 31, 2015. Modifications to these dates are possible.

The BCARS Visiting Scholar will be based at Northeastern University and will work and conduct research with faculty and graduate students from the Consortium partners; give guest lectures at member institutions throughout the term of the appointment; prepare and submit for publication working papers, articles, Op-Eds, and/or other relevant works of scholarship and policy related to the Arab Awakening/Uprisings; and participate in other BCARS activities such as workshops, public presentations, and the annual retreat.

Under the supervision of BCARS Director, Prof. Denis Sullivan, in collaboration with Assistant Director, Dr. Sarah A. Tobin, and working closely with all Consortium partners, the Visiting Scholar will be key to developing the broader network of BCARS. She/He will be responsible for visiting at least one partner campus each week of each semester in residence. In conjunction with the Assistant Director of BCARS, as part of community outreach, the Visiting Scholar will also help to identify and engage the numerous scholars already coming to the greater Boston area from the Arab region.

Research and Policy: 70%

- Participate in, and help lead, a series of two-day workshops on research and policy on the Arab Awakening.

- Participate in workshops on research methods, qualitative techniques for studying Arab societies and politics, and literature relevant to the Arab Awakening (both historical and contemporary).

- Organize and lead training workshops on public engagement: developing policy papers, writing Op-Eds, presentation skills for public talks, and so on.

Guest Lecturing and Mentoring Graduate Students: 30%

- Participate in forums for Boston-area graduate student research presentations, with an aim toward the preparation of conference papers and publication of collaborative works.

- Provide occasional guest lectures/presentations in Graduate Seminars on Arab Awakenings (Arab Spring).

- Serve as Mentor to any graduate student in any of the Boston Consortium partner institutions.

Qualifications and Research Focus

The successful candidate will have received her/his PhD in a relevant field, such as: Political Science, History, Sociology, Anthropology, International Relations, Comparative Politics, Public Policy, Middle East Studies, Communications Studies, Literary Studies or Journalism. Candidates who are ABD will also be considered, provided they have significant experience (e.g., in academia, foreign policy, or international policy work). The successful candidates research should focus on contemporary Arab politics, history, culture, society, and/or economy as relates specifically to the Arab Awakening/Uprisings.
