The American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). Established in 1866, FAS is the oldest and largest faculty at AUB. FAS houses twenty-eight academic departments, programs, and centers in four major areas of study: the humanities, the social sciences, the natural sciences, and the quantitative thought. It offers undergraduate programs leading to bachelor’s degrees as well as graduate education leading to master’s degrees in most fields. It also offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Arabic Language and Literature, Arab and Middle Eastern History, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Theoretical Physics. It has around 244 full-time and 145 part-time faculty and over 2,600 students from Lebanon and the region pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. FAS is considered the university’s principal gateway to higher studies and professional education. It embodies AUB’s core commitment to the liberal arts and sciences. Reporting to the provost, the dean is the responsible academic and executive head of the faculty. In addition to managing academic and administrative functions of the faculty, the dean participates in university-wide shared governance processes and is a member of AUB’s leadership team. The dean will be an accomplished academic leader qualified for appointment to the rank of tenured full professor in an appropriate FAS department. Leading candidates will have a distinguished record of scholarship; a commitment to education, research, community outreach as well as the values and the vision of AUB; the capacity to advance the faculty’s academic mission and interests; demonstrated administrative experience including strategic planning, personnel management, budget development, and management in an academic setting; a record of recruiting and retaining high-quality faculty and students; and the capacity to engage with multiple constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as leaders in the political, social, and governmental sectors.
